Engine idles erratically 850 1996

I would check for a substantial vacuum leak. Some codes which are "performance" codes can return very quickly during operation if the problem has not been solved. Alternatively, is it possible you have an additional code set somewhere else in the system (gearbox, abs, etc)? The clearing operation will not work until all stored codes have been displayed at least once on the indicator during the same diagnostic session.
