fuel economy V70-XC70 1999

Hello all,
We own two 99' XC. We drive both about the same around town and a run here and there on the highway for 10-30 miles. Once in a while we may drive upwards of 75 miles once every three months or so. Home bodies.... Anyhow, one wagon gets about 17mi/gallon about 325 per tank of gas. The other gets 22 MPG and about 360 per tank. The former car has had it's rear o2 sensor changed for the second time recently. I have a check engine light on but I am atributing it to a faulty ABS which I hope to be sending to Victor Rocha soon. The former car has Uniroyal Tiger Paws and the latter has Michelins MXV4s. Any suggestions to improve fuel economy? This poor car has many issues. I find solice in the fact that our mechanic whom I trust says that the Volvo engine will last you forever, you just have to rebuild the car around it. I plan on driving this car to 250 -300k mi. I love this car despite the baggage. You need to have a strong stomache or a huge wallet to utter the words "Volvo for Life." I expect you will be hearing more from me, I apologize in advance.
