Help! Check engine/overdrive flashing no acceleration 850 1995

Please help! After two weeks gone I got back and started the 95 850 base wagon up and it started up with a larger than normal bang..the alternator went rrrr, rrrr, rrr, and then bang! on went the engine. As I was backing up the car was fine, but then put into drive the check engine light went on and what I think is the overdrive light (upward pointing arrow) started flashing. I turned the car off and waited. Then it would not start up again. Finally after a few tries it started. Same lights flashing; everything else seemed OK, including the engine. Reverse again was fine, but when I put it into drive it did move forward but I had absolutely no control via the pedal.

Before I have it towed to the nearest mechanic, who isn't a Volvo expert (but is amazing nevertheless) can anyone give me tips as to what could be causing this??
