With the engine off, rake the gear selector back and forth 10-12 times. If this cures your problem it indicates that your PNP switch is going bad. Even if it doesn't help, it would be one of the things I would suspect with the flashing up arrow and what sounds like trying to run in a higher gear. Failing PNP will also cause start problems.
