no start S70 1999

the car is a 1999 s70 glt with 101,000 miles. runs great no troubles until today. the ignition key went into the slot just fine but would not turn past position one. it felt like i had the wrong key. i called a mechanic i know and he said to forcibly turn the wheel while twisting the key. after what seemed like a 1/2 hour the key turned past postion one and started. the mechanic said if it happens again to bring it in, which will be a pain since the car will probably not start when it happens again. right now the key feels like it's in mollassas between position one and two. so i know this will happen again so what is the cause? anbody????
