When it's really low, it will cease to function. Do you have, or have you added a pollen filter? If not, I would. Then do the gas check. I bought a can of refrigerant and gauge for about $18 at AutoZone. I have a small leak. Not going to replace the evap. Your AC gets used every time you turn on the defroster.
