Tailgate won't latch V70-XC70 1998

My 1998 V70 T5 tailgate stopped latching today. My gas struts are pretty weak and I was parked on an incline, so when the tailgate closed, it slammed pretty hard. It just bounced back up and didn't latch. Looks like the latch mechanism in the tail gate part is rotating like it should but it is not "catching". I did not detect anything wrong with the latch part on the rear of the cargo area. Any suggestions? Thanks. John K.
