causes for not shifting? 850 1996

I have to get some help from this group before my wife finds out. After reading this thread on no reverse light and check engine light, I had the PNP switch replaced by the local shop. They bitched to me for an hour on the connector switch being so stuck, they had to splice the new one in with butt connectors! I should have given them the directions from Volvospeed/Bay 13 ofcourse, but I didn't want to tell them "how to do their job" ! They obviously didn't drive the car around the block, because IT WON'T SHIFT OUT OF FIRST GEAR ! The shifter responds well to R (lights work now) , N , D, 2 and 1 (arrow light comes on then). 15-20 times of quick shifting with engine off didn't help. I removed the battery tray and sighted the alignment of the linkage, looks good. Do you think they missed a butt connector and the tranny is not getting speed sensor data? Or is there a shiftdown cable that's stuck?
