Transmission Hiccup S80

Our 99 S80 has about 137K on it, and has been relatively problem free for us. Today we were nearing the end of a long highway trip (about 500 miles). I tried to kick in the passing gear and the engine got up to about 3500 rpm and then hesitated, not letting me get up to passing speed.

I was able to keep it at highway speed the rest of the way home, but the passing gear wouldn't kick in.

Anyone have an idea what's behind this? Solenoid comes to my mind, but I'm not sure about that.

I hope it's a temporary problem. I may have another long trip next weekend.

Happy New Year! 8-(
