a/c problem, unusual noise 850 1996

While it may be winter here, I often have my AC on to keep my windows from fogging up. Tonight, I heard this pretty loud noise (not really a whine, more like a grinding - actually, at first, i thought it was a flat tire). After pulling over, shutting the car off, restarting, etc, i realized that the noise stopped when i turned the a/c off. This car has had 2 or 3 evaporators and the a/c seems to work since it quickly defogs the windows. Does anyone know what could be causing this noise? Compressor? Also, it seems to get louder the faster I go (higher RPMS). Thanks!
