Check engine light on S40-V40

Hi
My daughter's 00 S40 just turned 53K miles. Yesterday the check engine light came on. That happened about 1 year ago and my mechanic said that one of the spark plugs was bad. He replaced all. Now I just had the car serviced at 52.5 K
miles ( air filter, oil, filter, brakes, transmission fluid) and this happened.
I was just wodering if anybody out there experienced something similar?
If so how can I detect the cause? Im not familiar with OBD scanners at all. Can anybody give me a quickie on out they operate, what I need to buy,how to interpret the codes, etc?
Tks very much
