Just picked up a `98 S70 with 220,000 miles at auction. Check Engine Light on and when searching glove box found previous owner's failed emission test and $689 estimate for replacing mass air flow sensor!!!

Searching through Brickboard I was resigned to replacing AMM myself and had found some reasonable prices on eBay (less than $100) for parts.

BUT, thanks to Ken C. on another post ("you can't fix an AMM but it may not be dead") I tried unplugging and saw connection was very corroded. (Be sure to disconnect battery first, this will also allow Check Engine Light to reset) A little careful burnishing of the contacts and some electrical cleaner and Voila! I just saved myself lots of cash!!!!

Moral: Before replacing the part, check and clean the connections.
