Optimum grade is probably 91 .... 850

Most volvos are designed for AKI 91 (that's the old RON+MON/2, which is marked on gas pumps everywhere in the U.S.) optimally, and with a minimum of 87. In any case, you should consult your owners manual for specifics for your car.

If you use less than the optimum, the engine may retard its timing at times and reduce your power output and gas mileage.

If you can't get AKI 91 gas, exactly, use the next highest thing. For example, where my daughter lives (west coast), she can get AKI 91 in most gas stations. On the other hand, where I live (east coast), the choices are 89 or 93 (as well as 87), so I have to use 93.

Good luck.
