Ripped leather auto shift boot V70-XC70

I was surpised to notice a one inch long rip in the side of the leather auto shifter boot ths morning.

At first I thought this would be easy to replace but now I wonder if it's necessary to remove the shifter to do so. Has anyone had this problem and replaced their leather boot? If so, what steps are necessary?
