Dead Alternator? 850 1996

I was driving my 1996 Volvo 850 and everything was running fine. Then a warning light appeared. The car was still running fine but I pulled over at the nearest gas station. As soon as I put the car in park, SRS and arrow (TRAC?) light came on. Tried to move the car a little further and had almost no power. Turned the car off and when I tried to turn it back on it wouldn't start. All I can hear is a clicking noise. All the lights, etc. are working fine but still won't turn over. The warning light looks like a battery but manual says if this light comes on to check the "generator belt". I am NO mechanic so I have absolutely no idea what this is. Someone mentioned that it may be my alternator- is this a possibility? I would love any advice before I have it towed to be repaired. Thanks.
