Dead Alternator? 850 1996

When the battery light comes on, it means that the alternator is no longer charging the battery. Your car ran until you turned it off, but it was using battery power which was not being replenished by the alternator. I doubt that the belt broke, otherwise you would have had no power steering.
You will probably need a new/rebuilt alternator. The tracks/srs lights coming on bother me a little, but that could be explained due to the loss of 12V.
The lights will work for a little while eventhough the starter does not engage, because the starter needs more amperage than the battery has available.
