Purchasing first used Volvo...which is best?

I don't have my heart set on a turbo, although it will be a nice touch. There is a '97 855 wagon listed for sale that I will be checking out tomorrow. We have a wonderful Volvo service shop here in CA that has car listings. Several of my friends are customers of that shop, and have nothing but good things to say about them.

I would consider a post-1999 Volvo, but that's when Ford came into the picture, and I've not heard a lot of positive things about that generation of Volvo. Otherwise, I would go for it since it's a newer car.

Age aside, are there any RWD models that have good reliability?

I've checked out some of the other imports, and in terms of workmanship, safety and overall quality, they don't touch Volvo...they seem like cheap plastic by comparison...
