I like mine a lot. As Klaus pointed out, they do require a lot of maintenance. However, the drive is sweet. It is a bit harsh, but I have gotten used to mine. If I can get used to a harsh ride I think anyone can.
I bought mine with 140K and have put 35K on. The turbo is very dependable, I believe, from what I have heard. It has great performance for passing on the highway.
Both the other people pointed out the positive of on board user interface until '95. You don't want to be running to someone everytime a code is thrown. I giuess you could buy a box somewhere for post 95
There seems to be some disagreement on which years the A/C was bad on. My mechanic claims the 95 wasn't bad for A/C part failure. I think he believed 93-94 were bad for that. All I know is mine has never had a problem, but many 850 owners have had problems. Also, the rear main seal is an expensive job and seems to be required too frequently. I think the ABS module in 96-97 is the one Vic Rocca repairs due to bad design resulting in part failure.
Klaus pointed out the 95 doesn't have a disc slot in the radio head unit. Yes I miss one. There is another head unit available but I think they go for $300 or so.
I bought a 2003 VW GTI with a 6 cylinder engine, heated leather seats, rain sensing wipers and all kinds of stuff a year before I bought the 850T. Once I found how comfortable and pleasant the 850T was too drive, I sold the GTI. Haven't regretted it! Good luck. Don '95 854T 175.5K
