Tiny red/brown specs on painted surfaces - what is it??? 850

I've noticed these tiny little specs, red-brown in color, scattered around my 850. Luckily I applied wax last fall, so I can just push them off with a fingernail with no damage. Washing doesn't touch them, and they appear even on the glass as well, I haven't noticed them on the black trim.

What is it? Am I driving behind someone leaking trans or brake fluid?
I found some articles mentioning it is brake dust from a superheated rotor (stuck caliper), but my brakes are functioning normally - just changed the pads a couple months ago all around. If so, how could the specks get on the front of the car?

Any other ideas would be appreciated. These specs are about the size of pen dot, always round, no globs or irregular shapes.

Thanks!
