1993 850 alarm - how to disable? 850 1993

I picked up a '93 850 winter car, which has turned out to be a real peach. It is an 850 GLT sedan and I discovered it has an alarm system that is activated whenever I lock it up with the key or remote. A situation arose a couple weeks ago where I used the spare set of keys without the remote and locked the car up with the key. When I reopened the car, the alarm did not disengage and I was unable to start the car and as a result got standed. The owners manual indicates that the key should disable the alarm, but no matter what I did, this did not work. I had to have my wife drive to me with the remote with the other keyset and with the remote, lock and unlock the vehicle, disabling the alarm.

So my questions are, does anyone know what I am doing wrong or what is wrong with the vehicle? I am concerned that if my remote battery someday goes dead or the remote breaks, I may get stranded. I do not need the alarm, so if there is a way to switch it off, I am ok with that. Any and all advice is welcome. Thank you.
