Your odometer is broken because a tooth or teeth in the gear which drives the odometer has broken off. This is a common Volvo 850 fault. The plastic gear is about the size of your small fingernail. Check odometergears.com for an explanation and a new gear. You must remove and disassemble the instrument cluster to repair this breakage.

PS: A google search will provide your with more gear vendors and instructions on how to solve this common problem. It is worth your time to learn how to do this as a dealer might want to change the whole odometer unit or in some cases the whole instrument cluster which is not necessary and very expensive.
