Which 850's to avoid ? 850

I am the owner of a '82 244DL 4spd+OD 178K miles.While this car has served me well & most likely will into the future I like to consider my options.I would assume the first 2-3 years of the 850 should be avoided since it usually takes that time for a new model to work the "bugs" out.I & my wife are partial to stickshifts but may consider an automatic.Is the 850 & its successor S70 model hard to work on?Does it really need that IPD skidplate?
