Clutch 850

I have a noise in the clutch on my "95 850 wagon. If the trans is in neutral I can operate the clutch pedal with no noise, therefore I would assume it is not a throw out bearing problem. With the clutch depressed I shift into 1st or reverse and still no noise, as I let the clutch out you can hear what appears to be the clutch material sliding against the flywheel, it is a very pronounced sound and is definately "new". The clutch doesn't slip and operates freely. I thought it may be a worn clutch and the sound was that of the rivets contacting the flywheel, In my experience if that was the case the clutch would most likely be slipping.I keep hearing about a groan that is common on clutch engagement with these Volvos, this couldn't really be described as a groan though. Any thoughts???
