SC-815/816 and my ipod 850 1996

OK - so from what I can see, you can buy and adapter (auxillary input connecting into CD changer slot) to interface my ipod (or other mp3 player) for about $150, give or take. Now given this cost, why wouldn't I just go and buy a new head unit that plays CD, mp3 discs and interfaces with my ipod for the same price? This would even give me room to install cupholders below the single din unit (since my SC-815 is double din). Are there any special requirements for installing a new head unit into the 850's?
