Timing Belt Replacement 850 1993

Hi there--it's been a while since I have visited but need some advice. I have a 1993 854 GLT. I had the timing belt/serpentine belt etc. replaced at 96,389 miles in December of 2003. It was my understanding that it needs to be replaced every 50k miles on my model (which would be at 146,389 miles) I am currently at 115,548 miles. My mechanic however, said that it needs to be replaced every 50k miles OR every 5 years. I totally trust my mechanic but I've never heard the 5 year rule.

Thanks!
