auto transmission woes V70-XC70 2001

I looked for this and can't find answer here, sorry if it has been covered.

My '01 XC automatic transmission is extremely jerky when changing gears. When coasting downhill, it'll snap your neck when it shifts into lower gear. Same or worse when accelerating.
My trusted mechanic, not at the dealer, says its a software issue and the transmission is O.K.
I've already had a software upgrade from dealer to correct similar problem when stopped, like at a red light. Now it seems to up or downshift with no rhyme or reason when driving around town.
Any hints or suggestions?
