Help retreiving ECC codes and clearing C70 2000

I have a "blinking" ECC on my C70.
I've read a number of posts about ECC codes, but I'm missing some of the basics:

1) I had read that an ODBII could read the codes. However, when I brought it to Autozone, no codes could be found. Any advice?

2) What tool do I need to buy/build to check the codes if ODBII isn't the answer?

3) In lieu of having the codes yet... i can't seem to preceive a problem in ECC operation. Likely issues?
