A/C compressor not running 850 1997

Hi,

Well actually, the compressor WAS running a few days ago, it was fast-cycling so I figured it just needed some coolant, as it does every spring. But by the time I bought a can of R134a and was ready to hook it up, I realized that NOW the A/C wasn't doing ANYTHING.

The compressor does not kick in. The little blue light on the dashboard switch does light up (and yes I had the blower running). The pressure in the system reads about 40 psi. And I checked the fuse (#31, 25A).

Hope I did not ruin the compressor by running it with a lack of coolant in the system.

Where do I start with the diagnosis?

cheers
