XC90 Rear Hatch Release XC90

The rear hatch release on my 2004 XC90 (the latch you pull to open the top portion of the rear hatch door) has always felt "soft". I figured it was just engineered that way.

Well, today it just stopped working so I can't open the rear hatch. Have you had this concern? Any remedy you can share?
