Odometer and check engine light 850 1994

I have a 1994 850 with 255,000 miles. I cleared all the codes in order to get my check engine light to go off after working on my car. What ever I did was enough to keep the light off but then I noticed right away my odometer quit working. It's always something with this car. Is this just a coincidence that my odometer quit working at the same time the check engine light went off or is there more to it than that? If they are not related what do I do to fix the odometer?
