Tanker - You are right on.
The safety numbers that Bill mentions suffer a bit because they are relative for their group. Volvo's numbers have gone up because most cars are FINALLY getting safer. The 850 figure is a telling stat.
The S 40 got a score of 87, the V79 got a 58, and the S 60 an 88.
These scores are below average for ALL vehicles of ANY size
The only 850 I could find (I only looked for 5 minutes or so) was the '95 to '97 models the 850 wagon scored 53 close to HALF the average for ALL vehicles!
When the US was setting safety standards prior to 1968 we tested a handful of PV544s to serve as a baseline! We are still using those standards based on a great car designed in 1943!!!
BTW my daughter was hit by a drunk driver in her '87 744TI. The hit was right in the driver's door and the trauma center X-rayed her hips and legs because the ambulance attendants and ER workers could not believe that she was not severely injured. None of the three passengers were injured either. One thing that helped her was window tinting that held the driver's door glass together, she just got a raspberry on her face when the glass hit her.
