Your 1988 240 does not use a computer to control the transmission, thank goodness! Nor does it store engine related faults.

If the thermostat was installed correctly, I would check the engine coolant temp sensor with a multimeter to see if the sensor has not failed. The electrical connectors could also be very dirty.
