how do you check for damage - V70 runs rough - timing belt slip? V70-XC70 1998

I'm looking to possibly buy a 98 V70 AWD that's in great shape - except the motor. Car has 98K miles, it runs but idles rough and misses when driven. There's no sticker on the timing belt cover so I suspect it hasn't had it's timing belt changed. Owner says all maintenance has been done - but doesn't have a receipt for the timing belt.

Is there a procedure to check if there is physical damage to the valves? Will a compression check tell or could compression be down due to a slipped belt with no valve damage?

Thanks for your help!

Pete
