Missing Oil? 850 1996

My sister has a 850 T-5. It has about 120k miles. It uses about 3qts. oil every 1000 miles.

I didn't see any major leaks, just a little oil smudging on top of valve cover. where is the oil going?

I've had 740 GLEs, several of them, and know that if the flame trap gets fouled it can push oil out everywhere. Does the 850 have one? This car does not smoke, and runs very smoothly, no valve train chatter at all.

any comments or suggestions.
