Yes, those are typical symptoms of bad MAF.The charcoal canister is an anti pollution device, designed to collect gas fumes formed in the gas tank and route them into the engine instead of atmosphere. If your is broken, fix it. It will affect performance and trigger codes.

PS: In order to check your MAF, you can unplug it. Engine will go into a default mode and will smoothen out somewhat. But not enough to drive safely.
