Leaking transmission between trannie and torque converter on 95 850T 850

I have a bad transmission leak that has been going on for about 3 months. I first thought it was the rear seal and took it to a transmission shop who was going to replace if for only $30. After checking on the rack, it appears that its leaking around the gasket between the transmission and torque converter. I also notices a lot of excess silicon gasket between the housings. Looks like a prior owner must have had this trannie apart. The transmission shop says it might be a bad converter or a shaft seal on the converter. Was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. He wants around $800 to pull it and fix it if its just the shaft, more of couse if they need to replace the converter. I have not seen any posts concerning this problem, mostly other associated leaks. I go through around 2 quarts of fluid a day now. Other then the leak, it runs and shifts great, as long as I keep checking the fluid. Any input would be greatly appreciated before I just take the word of the local transmission shop. Thanks
