help! screeching after starting the engine

I just left the store for a few minutes and came back to start the car then the awful screeching sound started and let it ran 5 miles to reach home and can smell burning. Could this be the auxiliary fan went bad or other horrible stories for this car. Then I let my wife started it tonight to make sure that the engine is cold and fan does not kick-in but again the screeching sound is still there. Does the fan turn-on once you start the car?
Thanks for the help, hope to fix before deciding to bring to volvo shop.
