How large is my '99 V70 gas tank?

Of course it doesn't ping. There are 2 knock sensors attached to the block and they can detect ping long before you can hear it. When knock sensors detect a knock, they add gasoline to the intake and reduce the timing. That will reduce your gas milage.
Try the middle grade of gasoline, much better milage around town. And 40psi is a bit much, ouch :)
