S40 1st generation: thumbs up or thumbs down? S40-V40 2001

We turned in my wife's leased 2003 S40 in May at 50k miles. I could have bought it for 11k, but we decided to use the 98 V70 for the space for the kids.
The only thing that happened in those 50k miles was that the rear lights (all)went out after the dealer replaced one bulb once... I got a friendly warning for it. In summary, it was a good car, just too small for our needs, and the engine compartment looks like you couldn't fit your hands around anything.
