crud on dipstick 850 1995

i went to check the oil on the wifes 850 with 170K mi. i found no sign of oil just a mayonase type of crud on the dipstick. what can cause this? i put some engine flush stuff to start with figuring i at least need an flush and oil change. What else do i kneed to check, could this be related to the engine venting system i have seen mentioned or the flame trap? thanks all. bobd
