Need help diagnosing a problem V70-XC70 1998

There is a tranny fluid temp sensor, or oil temp sensor. But I have never heard of a "thermo control valve".
The temp sensor is used to automatically down shift the tranny when it gets too hot, usually because of a heavy load and going up hill in 4th. If the sensor fails, it will put the car into limp home mode. But it should not cause the torque converter to remain coupled and cause the engine to die.

I would have the dealer service "tech" clear all of the codes, then drive the car and retrieve the codes again after the engine dies or tranny flutters.
