yellow oil froth 850 1997

While blowing through Kansas for the holidays, a routine check of the oil, I noticed that the dipstick showed a frothy yellowish gunk. I had been cruising at about 3000 rpm for about 2 and a half hours. There was some loss of coolant in the overflow, but I have not been able to duplicate the situation since.
In addition to possible head gasket, block problems, could the culprit be a cracked oil cooler? If so, how do you test it? Thanks.
