V70 AWD Bevel Gear Repair Costs

Looking for info on what specifically goes wrong with the older AWD system. I've read several posts recommending this system should be avoided due to "bevel gear" problems. Is this a repair I can do myself? I have the mechanical skills to tackle almost any repair. The only thing that usually stops me is if the job requires expensive special tools that aren't worth the cost just to do one repair. Anyone have any hands on experience with this repair?
