Steering Sticking, HELP :) 850

On an old 164E I had the steering column u-joint run dry. The car was about 15 years old. The symptom was like you describe.

I would also verify the condition of the steering bearings (at upper strut mounts). I replaced these bearings with the upper mounts on my 850, as I had noticed the old ones were quite stiff, though the steering effort wasn't really objectionable in my case.
