Breather Box, engine whisteling ?????? S60

looking for advice on how to check the breather box on my S60(70K miles change oil religiously, but it still goes through a quart every 1000 miles). I can pull the breather hose from the head and blow compressed air down the hose and feel the air coming out the dipstick and/or the oil fill cap.Seems to me it should be open. Problem is that when the engine is running it whistles until I pull the dipstick or loosen the fill cap, then whistle stops.
Anyone have any thoughts? There are no leaks from the breather box and the thought of pulling everything out to replace it makes me dread it.
Thanks
