All I can suggest from here is to gently tap the plastic housing and see if any plastic pieces fall out. You just might need a new latch mechanism... and they are not cheap at the dealer. I had to buy one for my 1998 about 2 years ago when the locking rod broke.
Try working the latch with the screw driver a few more times, whatever is sticcking may fall out and give you a slight reprieve.
