855 stalling, trouble starting, on occasion...

Hello all,

Just looking to see if anyone may have had similar stalling/starting issues w/ their 850. Mine is a 94 855, and a few months back i gassed her up (to the top) and shortly thereafter, noticed a gas smell after i ran it. I took it to my local garage just to check for safety concerns, etc. They are not volvo specialists, so they told me that the fuel pump needed replacing, there was a 'leak'... I consulted the brickboard post diagnosis, and someone (maybe Klaus) advised me that there may be a small crack near the top of the pump or that the seal or adhesive was dried out. so, after some of the fuel burned off, no more smell.

but, maybe a week ago, i was in traffic and the car just quit. it was low on gas, and it did restart after a minute or 2. took it to a gas station, put may 3/4 in and it was fine. yesterday, i was approaching a redlight (1/4 tank of gas in it) and it stalled again. it restarted right up, but this is a safety issue now.

any advice? does the fuel pump need replaced, or is it something else? just trying to not replace the pump is that's overkill...

Thanks in advance,

Ron
