AC cutting out on '99 V70 V70-XC70 1999

Greeting all, it has been a while since my last posting. Life has been too busy, and the cars have been running fine.

I have a 1999 V70 (purchased last summer with 119,000 miles) with AC and ECC that has a nasty habit of shutting down in hot weather. When the AC is working, it puts out all kinds of cold air. However, especially when it hot out and doing slow or in stop and go city driving, the AC will shut down. If we turn off the AC for a few minutes, the system will start up again and work fine for awhile. Then, it will shut down again. Normally, if we are on a road with steady speed (say 40 mph or greater) or on the interstate, we generally don't have a problem. However, my wife had the AC shut down on her yesterday on I90 at 65 mph.

The condensor is clean of bugs and leaves. It is my understanding a light will flash on the ECC cluster if there is a fault code in the ECC system. There are no flashing lights. There is no unusual compressor noise.

Any thoughts as to what the problem may be? Since this is the wife's car, and she uses it to visit clients, I am under more than usual pressure to resolve the problem. Hate to take it to the dealer due to the high cost and since the problem may not show itself. (My luck would be a cool day at the dealer and the system will not act up.)

Roasting in Rochester,
