Fuel grades V70-XC70 2000

Now I'm confused.

When I told my mechanic ( not a Volvo shop, but he used to work at a Volvo agency)
I was getting nervous about the cost of 91-octane fuel for my 2000 V70R AWD, he suggested I could get by with the Medium grade fuel. A mechanic who repairs Volvos in North Central Ontario says he uses regular fuel in all his Volvos! What is the underlying reason for the "recommendation " Volvo issue for 91 octane gasoline?
