Climate Control Fan - or resistor pack? V70-XC70 1999

Recently purchased this V70 XC. I can feel the AC and heater working fine at speed - all Climate Control functions appear to be work fine but the fan is inoperative. I removed it and tested by hooking directly up to 12v. It spins and goes thunk thunk thunk but not very fast IMHO. Reinstalled it and listened carefully and could hear it spinning ever so slightly (thunk thunk thunk) before it stopped altogether.

Before spending $150+ on a new fan motor is there any way to determine if that is the actual problem. I've been reading about the infamous resistor pack problem and wonder which way to go.

Thanks,
Curt
